Dear all
With the usual apologies for cross-posting, please find details for the next CoFHE Mid-West and AGM event. This event is free but places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
The S@iL Centre at the University of Reading
The Finzi Book Room
The University of Reading
Thursday 27 June 2002, 1.45 - 4.30pm
As a result of a substantial HEFC grant, The University of Reading now has an impressive new study centre, based within the Main Library on the Whiteknights campus. The S@IL facilities have been developed to combine the real and virtual in one learning environment. Specifically, the centre aims to support independent student learning and to help staff to take more advantage of electronic media and communication tools in their teaching and in the learning activities of their students.
The centre provides PC suites, study advice, presentation facilities, special needs equipment and much more. Users can now drop in to surf the Web, practice an oral presentation, finish a course assignment, work on a group project together, find out how they can better prepare for exams, improve their essay-writing skills, or find a space to work on their own laptop.
Converting existing library facilities in order to create S@iL was a major challenge. Project management skills, IT knowledge and ability to work with a wide number of stakeholders were all essential. This CoFHE Mid-West event will use Reading University's experience to explore issues such as integrating IT into libraries and how libraries can support teaching and learning.
The afternoon will feature:
* A presentation by Celia Ayres, Head of Systems, on how this large-scale study facility was planned within the context of continuing to operate a normal Library service.
* A presentation by Dr. Julia Phelps, Director of Teaching and Learning, on how S@iL is contributing to the University's teaching and learning strategy.
* A guided tour of the facility
* The AGM of the CoFHE Mid-West Circle
* Open forum
Refreshments will be provided
