- With apologies for cross-posting-
The UK Serials Group is pleased to announce details of its 2003
International Research Awards Programme:
The award and eligibility:
Two separate one thousand pound awards are available to any individual
currently registered in a higher education institution or in employment and
undertaking formal pre-qualification study. In both cases, the piece of work
being undertaken must form part of the requirements for the course or of the
formal pre-qualification study.
The requirement:
A dissertation or piece of research on any aspect of the academic or
professional serials industry.
The world of scholarly communication and professional publishing is
undergoing major change as the impact of the internet is felt by all parties
in the information chain. Existing formats, collection development policies,
delivery methods and commercial models are all being challenged by the
arrival of the electronic journal.
UKSG believes that in this exciting and very much transitional time, a
wealth of subject matter is available. However, we would not wish to
restrict potential applicants too much and will consider any submission that
is clearly serials-related.
Examples of some of the topics that could be addressed include:
- secure archiving of electronic journals
- non-commercial models of scholarly publishing
- new pricing and business models
- consortia activity
Proposals from interested individuals should comprise the research question
being posed, a review of the current literature, a description of the
methods to be used and a summary of the deliverables. An indication of how
the award money will be used to help fund the project should also be
included. A maximum of three A4 pages.
Timings:
The deadline for the submission of proposals is Friday 7 February 2003. A
decision will be made on the two successful submissions by Friday 28 2003
and they will formally be announced at the UKSG Annual Conference being held
between 7-9 April 2003 at Heriot Watt University.
Completed submissions should be sent to:
Paul Harwood, UKSG Education Officer, at the address below, preferably as an
e-mail attachment. Evaluation of the submissions received will be undertaken
by a panel drawn from the UKSG main committee and education sub-committee.
The successful authors may be asked to produce an article for Serials based
on their research.
