**Apologies for cross posting**
Dear all
The registration procedures for UK higher and further education access to
the following academic Census services will change on 1st August 2002:
*Census Dissemination Unit (for Casweb), MIMAS (http://census.ac.uk/cdu)
*Census Interaction Data Service (for WICID), School of Geography, Leeds
(http://census.ac.uk/cids)
Please note that not all of the services currently provided by the Census
Dissemination Unit (CDU) will be included in the initial phase of the Athens
authentication implementation, which is primarily aimed at introducing
Athens for Casweb. As from 1st August all new user registrations will be
made via the Census Registration Service. As a temporary measure additional
MIMAS accounts will also be available from the CDU to those who wish to use
CDU services not yet available via Athens. Work is underway to transfer all
CDU services to Athens authentication, and it is anticipated that this
should be completed by the end of 2002. During the transitional period a
temporary dual system allowing authentication using Athens or MIMAS accounts
will be in place. This will be withdrawn once the transition is complete
and there is no longer a need for MIMAS authentication. Existing users of
CDU services are strongly encouraged to obtain Athens accounts in addition
to their MIMAS accounts in order to anticipate the transfer to Athens
authentication.
The Census Registration Service will be extended shortly to include
registration for the Census Geography Data Unit (UKBORDERS)
(http://edina.ac.uk/ukborders) and for the Samples of Anonymised Records
(SARs), distributed by the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey
Research (http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/cmu). More information about the dates of
these handovers will be circulated as soon as possible. All four of the
Census services are free-at-the-point of use for all users in UK HE or FE;
the data have been made available to these sectors through the purchase of
the distribution licence by the ESRC and the JISC.
The new access system for these sites will use Athens Single Sign On. All
Census data users should obtain a personal Athens username and password
(available from local Athens administrators - there is a list at
http://www.athens.ac.uk/info/sitelist.html) before registering or
re-registering. More information about how the registration system will
work will be circulated on 1st August.
The Census Registration Service at the UK Data Archive
(http://www.data-archive.ac.uk) has developed the new one-stop shop
registration system. More information about its development can be found at
http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/home/CensusRS.asp.
