British Library's 'Reaching the Regions' Programme
Project Officer - North East
Short-term Contract: approximately 30 Days (Nov. 2002 - Jan. 2003)
Fee: £5,400 (Gross + capped expenses)
Background
The British Library's 'Reaching the Regions' Programme aims to create a
sustainable presence for the British Library in the North East region. The
Programme team wish to appoint an enthusiastic Project Officer to kick start
this first stage of an exciting period of collaboration between the British
Library, NEMLAC (North East Museums, Libraries & Archives Council) and the
museum, library and archive sector in the North East region. It is hoped
that the British Library's presence will be recognisable to the public in
the region and show an increase on impact from the outset of the programme.
In addition, it will highlight the wealth of material in the sector
(museums, libraries and archives), and aim to make these important historic
collections more accessible to a wider audience.
Regional Project Officer
A regional Project Officer is required. A significant amount of travel
across the region and to London will be required. Work will mainly focus on
identifying, with curatorial support, links between collections held by the
British Library in London with collections held in museums, libraries and
archives in the North East and, through these links, developing projects
which make a tangible difference to the profession and to end users. Many
of these projects have already been identified but we now need someone to
turn them into reality. A budget is available to initiate projects.
Reporting to colleagues and the Working Group is expected.
The successful candidate will have good knowledge of the North East's
culture. Ideally, you will be a degree graduate with several years working
experience in a museum, archive, historic collection or library, and
possess good written and verbal communication skills. You will be able to
take an analytical approach and see the big picture regarding
sustainability of implemented projects. The ability to meet deadlines is
essential, as is the use of modern technology.
Project management experience is also an advantage.
Please write, including a CV and details of two referees, explaining how
your experience and skills would make you most suited to this post by
Monday 18th November 2002. Interviews will take place on 26th November 2002
in Newcastle. For more information and an informal discussion, please
