DESIGNATION AND REGIONAL HUBS: what do they mean for the library domain?
Stamford, Thursday 26 September 2002
This cross-sectoral CPI Seminar will address the potential implications for
the libraries domain of the concept of Regional Hubs, and of the extension
of the museum Designation Scheme to libraries and archives.
Resource's Designation Scheme supports collections of national importance in
non-National museums around the country and brings in substantial funding.
Plans are in hand to extend the scheme soon to libraries and archives, with
a focus on *special collections* in libraries and on archival 'treasures'.
What will this mean in practice? What are the opportunities for libraries?
The creation of Regional Hubs is a Resource initiative to champion regional
museum practice and promote excellence. Partner museums will work together
to provide leadership and to improve standards. Are similar initiatives
feasible and desirable for libraries?
Speakers will consider the potential benefits and challenges for libraries
of these schemes, and the implications for cross-domain collaboration and
for the work of regional bodies.
