Dear Ms. Reading:
I am the Director of Publisher Relations at JSTOR. We are investigating
journals in the field of education for an upcoming collection, and are
seeking guidance about the literature from scholars and librarians. I am
anxious to include some of our UK participants in this process, and Alison
McNab at JISC suggested that I contact you. I am wondering if there are
perhaps a few librarians in the Education Librarians Group that could help
us. Your perspective will be especially valuable.
You are likely aware that JSTOR selects journals for inclusion. This is
driven by the need to establish priorities among the vast literature
published to devote limited resources to those journals that fit most
closely with our mission. Selections are based on a combination of factors
including the length of time a journal has been publishing, the number of
institutions that subscribe, the frequency of citation, and the assessment
of scholars and librarians about the value of the publications to
researchers. Most journals in JSTOR are peer-reviewed, though this practice
varies by discipline.
We have done an initial evaluation of journals in the field of education.
The attached spreadsheet ("draft title list") presents information on
approximately 60 candidate journals for the collection. Information
regarding the publisher, year of first publication, ranking based on total
citations, and circulation is included for each journal. The journals are
also grouped into various sub-areas (comparative, methodology, theory, etc.)
that we believe to be relevant for researchers and that require some
representation in the collection. A number of the journals (noted in bold
on the spreadsheet) are already part of the JSTOR archive or expected to be
essential to any education collection.
We would like your help in establishing priorities among journals and in
ensuring that the collection will meet the needs of scholars and students,
particularly those studying in the UK. It would be wonderful if you could
review the attached spreadsheet and respond to the following questions:
1. Evaluation of the various sub-areas. Are all areas important for
researchers and teachers? Are there areas that have been missed that should
be included?
2. Which journals in each sub-area would be viewed as essential by
researchers and teachers?
3. Are there journals that ought to be included that are not on this list?
My thanks in advance for your help. We hope to finalize the journals for the
collection quickly, and would be grateful for your response by April 18.
Please feel free to call or write with any questions.
Kind regards,
Heidi
