Hi,
A great way to end the week!
I thought I would check with New Scientist before responding, as we at UH
don't renew our subscription to the archive until July 2002, and we didn't
know about any pricing change either.
Apparently the license that we have is a site license, not an institutional
license, which has meant that many institutions would have to pay a license
for each site that wanted access making the cost prohibitive. So the whole
pricing structure has been changed to make it cheaper for us!!!. We
currently have a 10 user license which will effectively double in price
under the new pricing regime. If we take the unlimited license the price
will treble.
The main problem here is one of a lack of communication from Reed Business
Information forwarning customers about the change in policy. When we first
set up our online access to New Scientist and enquired about unlimited
access I was told it didn't exist. When we first set up access to New
Scientist we could not use IP authentication, but had to use a username and
password. When New Scientist introduced IP authentication we only found out
by accident. Might not Reed Business Information be expected to inform their
customers about changes they make to access and pricing arrangements that
their customers might want to pursue. The only information I get from Reed
Business Information is the invoice itself.
If you would like to voice your comments about this new pricing policy
please email Nicki Armstrong ([log in to unmask]) at Reed Business
Information.
Cheers
Lesley

We have recently received our renewal notice for electronic access to
the archive of New Scientist. It is over three times the original 2002
price estimate we were given when we originally subscribed.
Unfortunately we do not have the funds to continue our subscription and
are going to cancel.
Are there any other institutions out there who have found themselves in
a similar position recently? I've just added our name to the CHEST data
wishes list but it says that they have had insufficient expressions of
interest to pursue this.
Thanks
Jackie
