Dear Colleagues
Our science librarian recently sent the message below to lis-
scitech asking if anyone has taken a decision regarding the ACS
archive proposals. I'd like to put the same questions to this list. We
will collate replies and post to both lists.
My personal opinion is that we should firmly resist the iniquitous
moving wall, but continue talking to ACS in the hope that they will
eventually see a difference between purchasing a long archive, and
retaining access to content for which we have already paid
handsomely. I note in addition that SciFinder Scholar has links to
all parts of the ACS files. The backfile links cannot be suppressed,
so our chemistry academics continue to find references to content
we do not subscribe to. Is this a way to keep up pressure from
users to get their libraries to pay for the archives?

Dear Lis-Scitech
Discussions are underway here at Sheffield as to whether to sign
up for a subscription to the ACS journal archive.
Chemistry staff were horrified when they lost access when the trial
ended in June! Apart from affordability we are concerned about the
principle of paying an annual fee for access to an archive, when
most
archives are offered as a one off cost. We're also concerned about
the
moving wall, which sees the earliest year of content move into the
archive. We wondered if other institutions had signed up already
and
also if they shared similar concerns. I would appreciate your
comments
and will post a summary of replies to the list in due course.
