I have followed the exchanges concerning on-line access over the past few
weeks. This is the first time I recall a librarian extolling the virtues of
publisher web sites. We have not yet gone on-line with our journals, mainly
because of the problems highlighted within these exchanges. We did a survey
of our readers (individual rather than librarians) and around 90% said that
they would prefer on-line access through the publisher web site. We
currently have all abstracts (some 6,000) going back to 1981 on the web
site and we make back issues available on CD. I remain to be convinced that
putting the full texts on-line would give any net benefit to NTP, albeit,
of course, that everyone would like free reliable on-line access.
