Next CONNECTIONS event at Sutton Courtenay near Oxford
WHO WILL HELP THE HELPERS?
with Sue and Trevor Habeshaw
February 3
This workshop will explore issues of support, boundaries and supervision in the helping professions; it will be experimental and experiential and based in humanistic psychology.
Members of the helping professions are very good at supporting other people but this can be at the expense of asking for and obtaining support for themselves. In the first part of this workshop we will offer a variety of practical exercises where participants can identify the existing support in their lives, consider the demands, opportunities and stresses for which they need support and work together to devise and experience new ways of receiving support.
Institutions and bodies for the helping professions have regulations and guidelines for professionals and clients under their jurisdiction, such as rules about confidentiality. There are still boundary questions for the workers, however: for example, how do you handle your professionality when friends ask you for help? We invite you to bring such issues to the workshop to explore in the group.
Many members of the helping professions receive formal supervision. This is of variable quality and is often seen as inadequate by the recipients. In the second part of this workshop participants will work in peer supervision groups. This will enable them to give and receive support, identify good practice and, if they choose, establish real life supervision groups which can continue to meet after the workshop.
Bring a warm jumper and a cushion for extra support.
Sue is principal lecturer and head of student support in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the West of England, Bristol, where she teaches literature, creative writing, counselling and study skills. She also works for the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development, running workshops on stress management, assertiveness, interpersonal skills, supervision, etc.
Trevor has a psychotherapy and supervision practice in Bristol. He works as clinical assessor to AXA Healthcare and also currently acts as consultant and trainer to a number of NHS trusts and, via the Home Office, to Her Majesty's Prison Service.
