For contour generalisation I believe that the recieved wisdom is to
generalise the terrain surface and then generate new contours rather than
generalise the contours themselves. Though they're may be legibility reason
for applying generalisation processes directly on small areas of contours.

For rivers it depends what you want to do - prune the network or generalise
the lines themselves. For network pruning this is a good paper
