SENIOR GEOSPATIAL DATABASE MANAGER
The Department of Forest Resources Management at University of British
Columbia, Canada is seeking a senior Geospatial Database Manager to lead
the development of Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities and
spatial data management within the Faculty of Forestry.
Major responsibilities include: providing leadership and strategic
planning in development of GIS systems; advising and consulting with
faculty and researchers to determine spatial data needs and requirements;
developing, implementing and maintaining technical GIS systems; developing,
designing and maintaining custom applications and geospatial models;
designing, implementing and administering the Faculty’s primary spatial
databases, Faculty-wide GIS/RS procedures and database documentation
protocols; providing technical support and training to faculty, staff and
students, reviewing geospatial database course materials and making
recommendations on content; developing technical standards and staffing
requirements and equipment used; providing strategies to Faculty for
teaching support and curriculum development; recruiting, developing,
supervising, evaluating, disciplining and terminating staff; participating
on GIS committee and implementing recommendations; overseeing FIRMS
laboratory facilities and computer resources including purchasing,
budgeting, installation and maintenance of equipment; overseeing
maintenance and upgrading of geospatial/GIS/RS software licenses; and
performing other related duties.
The successful candidate should have a University degree (Masters or Ph.D.
preferred) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Geographic Information
Science, or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and
experience. Minimum five years’ related experience including use of
highend GIS software, application programming and development, team
management and administration of large spatial databases. Certification or
eligibility for certification in ESRI or other GIS-related programs and
programming credentials preferred. Project management or contract
administration skills required. Knowledge of current ESRI GIS software
products, including ARC/INFO 7 and 8, ArcView and various ESRI modules and
extensions. Demonstrated programming experience in Avenue, AML and Visual
Basic and database management systems including Access, ORACLE, SQLServer
and Informix. Experience with web-based data-serving applications (Java,
Perl, HTML, ASP, php). Working knowledge of remote sensing applications
and theory. Experience with international GIS data standards and quality
control. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal,
supervisory and problem solving skills.
One year position with extension based on funding.
