DAFSAM Workshop:
Drilling Active Faults in South Africa Mines, Sept. 23-26, 2002
This workshop will examine the scientific opportunities, target sites, and
instrumentation for fault-zone drilling in the deep gold mines of South
Africa. The mines offer unique natural laboratories for studies of
earthquake processes at their focal depth, down to 4 km below the surface.
Drilling into the active faults would allow near-field seismic observations,
systematic structural analysis, intra-fault zone observations (in-situ
stress, creep activity, triggered slip, and frictional heat), and the
analysis of dynamic changes during brittle, seismic failure. Participants
will include researchers from seismology, structural geology, geophysics,
rock mechanics, mining engineering, and tectonics. Field trips are planned
to the active fault-zones in mines of Klerksdorp area and Eland shaft.
The workshop is sponsored by the International Continental Scientific
Drilling Program (ICDP)
