Meeting summary: Mantle studies are at a critical juncture. On the one
hand seismic evidence seems to show that the upper and lower mantles are
mixing, while on the other hand observed geochemical and isotopic signals
suggest multiple reservoirs. At the same time, seismological studies also
indicate that some parts of the lower mantle may be significantly more
heterogeneous than would be expected from simple thermal arguments. How
can these observations be reconciled in a dynamic model where a single
layer should be well mixed? Can we place everything neatly into whole-
mantle convection with all anomalies coming from recycling of subducting
slabs, or do we need other deep earth reservoirs? The meeting will discuss
this problem of resolving the geochemical data in a dynamical context
constrained by seismic, and petrologic data. This issue is fundamental not
only for our understanding of mantle dynamics but also for the evolution of
the planet.
