Dear Colleagues,
A Special Issue of the Journal of African Earth Sciences has been generated
by the
El Jadida meeting and will be named "Key points on African Geology".
As you will see below in the guide for authors, its scope is to approach the
current
state-of-the-art in African Geology through short high quality papers
bringing new data or ideas that push up the knowledge in the geology of
Africa.
Participation to the El Jadida meeting is not a prerequisite, so, please
pass this message and attached file to any colleague potentially interested.
As you will see also, the first deadline is June 30 for sending to me a
provisional title with the list of authors.
I hope that you will be able to submit a nice short paper to this Special
Issue.
On behalf of the guest editors, Nasser Ennih and Bob Thomas,
Best regards,
Jean-Paul Liegeois
Head of Section

Guide for Authors, general instructions for the Journal of African Earth
Sciences, modified by specific instructions for the special issue "Key
points on African Geology".
Guest editors: N. Ennih, J.P. Liegeois and R.J. Thomas
This Special Issue was generated during the 19th Colloquium on African
Geology (CAG19) held in El Jadida in March 2002 and participants are
particularly welcome to submit a manuscript. However, the participation to
CAG19 is not a prerequisite and all authors that would wish to submit a
manuscript corresponding to the scope of this Special Issue are most
welcome.
Scope of the Special Issue: to approach the current state-of-the-art in
African Geology through short high quality papers bringing new data or ideas
that push up the knowledge in the geology of Africa.
Submission of manuscripts.
Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to: Jean-Paul Liegeois, Africa
Museum, B-3080 Tervuren, Belgium. Illustrations should also be submitted in
triplicate. One set should be in a form ready for reproduction, the other
three may be of lower quality. The indication of fax and e-mail numbers on
submission of the manuscript could assist in speeding communications. In
addition, if possible, a submission by attached files is recommended e-mail:
[log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]
The fax number of J.P. Liegeois is +32 2 6502252.
Submission of an article is understood to imply that the article is original
and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
Submitted articles must have a length between 4 and 6 printed pages (1 page=
5800 characters, including blanks), title, author names, affiliation,
abstract, text, figures, tables, captions and references inclusive. Surface
needed by figures and tables must be evaluated and taken into account for
the word count. Do not consider the smaller fonts used for references and
abstract, this will be equilibrated by title, authors and affiliation.
Abstract cannot exceed 200 words.
These short papers must be new, innovative and of high quality (both
scientifically and technically). Short review will be accepted only if it
brings new provocative ideas.
Before to be sent to authors, the overall quality, scientific and technical,
will be evaluated by guest editors.
Agenda:
June 30th, 2002: deadline for sending (e-mail ok) a provisional title with
list of authors.
September 30th, 2002: deadline for sending the manuscript.
December 31st, 2002: all reviewed ms sent back to authors
March 31st, 2003: revised versions sent back to guest editors.
May 31st, 2003: accepted ms sent to Executive Editors for final decision.
The volume will be divided into several topics following the accepted ms.
Submission of electronic text.
Authors are requested to submit the final text on a 3.5" diskette, CD or
Zip-disk. It is essential that the name and version of the word processing
program, type of computer on which the text was prepared and format of the
text files are clearly indicated. Authors are requested to ensure that the
contents of the diskette correspond exactly to the contents of the hard copy
manuscript. The word processed text should be in single column format. Keep
the layout of the text as simple as possible. If available, electronic files
of the figures should also be included on a separate floppy disk.
Language.
Manuscripts should be written in English. Authors whose native language is
not English are recommended to seek the advice of a colleague who has
English as his mother-tongue before submitting their manuscript.
Authors wishing to submit a French abstract may do so but this will not be
published in the Journal and will only appear on the Journal's Home Page,
after review by Professor Henri Kampunzu.
Preparation of the text.
(a) The manuscript should preferably be prepared on a word processor and
printed with double spacing and wide margins and include an abstract of not
more than 200 words.
(b) Authors should use IUGS terminology. The use of S.I. units is also
recommended.
(c) The title page should include the name(s) of the author(s) and their
affiliations, fax and e-mail numbers. In the case of more than one author,
please indicate to whom the correspondence should be addressed.
Keywords.
Authors should provide 4 to 6 keywords. These must be taken from the most
recent American Geological Institute GeoRef Thesaurus and should be placed
beneath the abstract.
References.
(a) References in the text consist of the surname of the author(s), followed
by the year of publication in parentheses. All references cited in the text
(and only these) should be given in the reference list.
(b) The reference list should be in alphabetical order.
Tables.
Tables should be compiled on separate sheets and should be numbered
according to their sequence in the text. Tables can also be sent as glossy
sheets to avoid errors in typesetting.
Illustrations.
(a) All illustrations should be numbered consecutively and referred to in
the text.
(b) Colour figures can be accepted providing the reproduction costs are met
by the author. Please consult the publisher for further information.
Page proofs.
Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by E-mail, to be
checked for typesetting/editing. The author is not expected to make changes
or corrections that constitute departures from the article in its accepted
form. Proofs should be returned within 3 days.
Reprints.
Twenty-five reprints of each article and 100 reprints of review articles are
supplied free of charge. Additional reprints can be ordered on a reprint
order form, which will be sent to the corresponding author upon receipt of
the accepted article by the publisher.
Author enquiries.
Submissions: For specific enquiries on the preparation of electronic
artwork, consult http://authors.elsevier.com
Other enquiries:
Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and
set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status,
by using the 'Track a Paper' feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article,
especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is
accepted for publication.
