Dear Ben, Eric and others,
as someone who is currently looking for a job I found it very frustrating
to see that most positions that are being announced provide a very short
time to the application deadline (two weeks or sometimes less). Given that
most applications still require traditional mail for delivery, this leaves
virtually no time to reply, especially if you are overseas. Furthermore,
some also require letters of recommendation, not just names of references.
One more thing: if a potential applicant has some questions regarding the
position, especially if the web page of the advertising department lacks
any information about the job, then please take the time to reply. (This is
a general comment, and does not refer to Ben and Eric's advertisement.)
With the introduction of email mailing lists one should think that speedy
distribution of knowledge (in this case job advertisements) should lead to
more time to reply. In my perception this is not the case. I am aware that
departments want to fill a position as soon as possible, but they should
give people some time to reply.
Well, this was on my mind for quite a while. Apologies to Ben and Eric, and
keep those job adverts rolling.
Jochen
