Hi,
Just a reminder that the Mineralogical Society of America is sponsoring a
shortcourse on the geochemistry of phosphates in Golden, CO, this October
on the Saturday and Sunday immediately prior to the GSA meeting. The focus
will be on geochronology, petrology, and biogeochemistry. The
pre-registration (i.e., cheap) deadline is this Friday, Aug. 30, so if
you're interested, you should act fast.
Saturday's talks will be:
0. A short introduction (J. Rakovan/M. Kohn)
1. Overview of phosphate minerals (F. Hawthorne)
2. U-Th-Pb dating (M. Harrison)
3. (U-Th)/He dating (K. Farley)
4. Fission track thermochronology (A. Gleadow et al.)
5. Apatite in igneous and hydrothermal systems (P. Piccoli)
6. Phosphates in metamorphic rocks (F. Spear/J. Pyle)
7. Sedimentary phosphorites (A. Knudsen/M. Gunter)
Sunday's talks (morning only) will be:
8. The Global PO4 cycle (G. Filippelli)
9. Trace elements in recent and fossil bone apatite (C. Trueman)
10. Stable isotopes of bioapatites (M. Kohn)
More details on the shortcourse, registration, logistics, etc. are
available through MSA's website at
http://www.minsocam.org/MSA/PO4_Min.html.
This will be a great opportunity to come up to speed on recent developments
in the (bio)geochemistry and geochronology of apatite, monazite, and other
interesting phosphates.
If you're not that interested in the shortcourse, but know someone who
might be, please forward this message on to them.
Thanks!
Matt Kohn and Frank Spear
