Institute of Geosciences, University of Potsdam
Short Course: Subduction-collision processes: from ultrahigh pressure to
ultralow temperature and from Archaean to present-day.
University of Potsdam, November 11-15 2002
As part of the Curriculum of the Center for Graduate Studies of the DAAD
(International Quality Network; IQN http://www.uni-potsdam.de/u/iqn/) at
the University of Potsdam we are running a short course of lectures and
practicals on the theme: " Subduction-collision processes: from ultrahigh
pressure to ultralow temperature and from Archaean to present-day". The
course will take place in Potsdam in the week November 11-15th, 2002. As
part of the short course we will visit various eclogite, garnet peridotite
and UHP-rock locations of the German Variscides. The course will be
restricted to about 20 advanced level undergraduate students, post graduate
students or researchers working in the fields of metamorphism and/or
geodynamics. Places will be allocated on a first come-first served basis:
if you are interested then apply immediately!
Speakers and topics already confirmed are:
Prof. W. Gary Ernst (Stanford, USA): (a) An overview of the tectonic
evolution of subduction zones: historical and modern viewpoints; (b) The
hunt for micro-diamonds at Maksyutov, Urals.
Prof. J.G. (Louie) Liou (Stanford, USA): (a) A comparative study of UHP
rocks from both the Kokchetav (Kazakhstan) and the Dabie-Sulu (China)
terranes. (b) Searching for clues of a former UHP evolution: exsolution
lamellae and inferred precursor phases.
Prof. P.J. O'Brien (Potsdam): (a) Cool, young, fast: Himalayan eclogites.
(b) Hot, middle-aged and overworked: Variscan UHP rocks.
Prof. R. Oberhaensli (Potsdam): (a) Cold subduction: carpholite-bearing
domains in the Alps and Turkey. (b) You can't subduct granites can you?
Dr. U. Altenberger (Potsdam): Disequilibrium on different scales: eclogite
facies pseudotachylite and shear zones, Bergen Arcs, Norway.
Dr. R. Schmidt (Potsdam): The Full Monty: UHP terrane with preserved
basement-cover relationships, Dabie Shan, China.
Dr. A. Moeller (Potsdam): Precambrian eclogites and their role in
understanding ancient subduction processes.
Dr. Martin Ziemann (Potsdam): From speculation to confirmation:
identification of UHP minerals by Micro-Raman.
Other themes and speakers are still in negotiation.
If you are interested in attending or require information then contact me
(I will not be here 23.8-10.9) or the department secretary Frau Roy.
Please pass this message on to anyone you think may be interested.
