Following Sasha Dobrota's request for information, I thought it would be
worth reminding the list that GEM runs a Freelance Network for its
self-employed members; I have forwarded Sasha's message on to the Network's
own email discussion list asking for comments. Whilst we accept that it
would be unlikely for museums to be able to create a national standard for
pay and conditions of freelance workers, we are keen to ensure that
freelancers are treated professionally. This would include an awareness on
the part of museums that hourly rates for self-employed people are not
comparable with those of employees as they need to include a range of
overheads such as office/admin costs, rent/mortgage, pension, training, tax,
insurance, etc. The Freelance Network can supply a useful document -
'Choosing and Using a Museum Education Consultant or Freelance Educator',
available from me in electronic or printed form.

Subject: Re: museum workshops
We are trying to establish what Museum's pay artists and casual staff for
museum workshops for children, adults and familes.
We would like to know:
What museums pay the workshop leader an hour?
Are workshops run workshops by museum staff or are they just facilitated by
you?
When working with non-school groups do they have support staff ?
If so what ratio's do they work with?
What they pay these staff?
How old they these staff ?
Are workshops self- financing or do you have a budget to support this work ?
Are artists materials and travel included in their hourly fee ?
Which are also trying to collect information about funding opportunites
available for outreach projects in local authority museum's. We would like
to compile a list which I would be happy to forward to anyone who would like
it.
We would welcome your feedback on these issues.
Many Thanks
Sasha Dobrota
