Southampton’s Archaeology Collections are now available online at
http://sccwww1.southampton.gov.uk/archaeology/ . The Archaeology Object
Database is designed to increase access to the city’s Designated
archaeology collections and provides a virtual tour of the city’s
archaeology collection, which spans prehistoric Roman, Saxon and Medieval
periods. The database is the result of three years extensive work
documenting the collection. It is funded by the Resource/DCMS Designation
Challenge Fund.
Information about the scheme
The Designation Scheme was launched in 1997 with the aim of identifying and
celebrating the pre-eminent collections of national and international
importance held in England’s non-national museums. Resource also
administers the Designation Challenge Fund, which is funded by the
Department for Culture, Media and Sport. This three year grant programme
has awarded a total of £15 million to support museums with Designated
collections.
Resource provides the strategic leadership, advocacy and advice to enable
museums, archives and libraries to touch people's lives and inspire their
imagination, learning and creativity. The Resource website can be viewed at
http://www.resource.gov.uk .
