This email is to all of you users of FSL on mac OS X (and others who might have any
ideas)... I have been experiencing strange problems when running some fsl tools
(mostly mcflirt) on data that is on an external firewire hd. Everything is fine if the data
is local or on a remote drive mounted via appletalk. What happens is that a process
just hangs, it is not executing any more, just siting there. And it cannot be killed. The
system flags it as 'uninterruptable' for some reson so nothing (at least nothing i know
of) will kill it. I have also had the same problem with one of our homegrown tools (for
image conversion). The process will hang after running it once, or after running it 25
times. There is no rule. And it will hang at different points within the program - also
no rule. When it does hang, it also hangs the finder so I cannot reboot. Other apps
will still be running, and I can close them, but I cannot open anything else, except a
new terminal window (providing Terminal app is running). At that point all I can do is
reboot by turning my computer off. Very bad... After this happened a few times I had
to reinstall my system because I had a corrupted system file. All of this (and talking to
other people fsl or our tools) leads me to believe that the problem is not in a
particular tool but something else - firewire maybe?
so, I would appreciate if you, users of fsl on mac OSX, would kindly send me your
experiences with fsl (or other unix tools you might be using) over firewire... That
might help me communicate the problem to people at apple or elsewhere!
Thank you!!!
Zrinka
