Researching internal displacement: state-of-the-art
International conference on IDPs
7-8 February 2003
Trondheim, Norway
The Research Group on Forced Migration at NTNU in cooperation with the
Global IDP Project has the pleasure of inviting you to this international
conference to launch a research network on IDPs. We invite researchers and
doctoral fellows to present papers on finished and ongoing work.
Research on internal displacement started relatively recently, but has
already contributed to broadening the wider field of refugee studies. The
conference seeks to identify the state-of-the-art and display the diversity
of IDP-related research. It will explore what research on internal
displacement has achieved so far, identify the most recent theoretical
contributions to the social sciences and how they may broaden the scope of
other disciplines. In short, where are the challenges and what are the
shortcomings?
Our intention is to open up for a broad range of approaches. Issues of
interest may be related to:
- the history and origin of the concept OInternally Displaced Person¹, how
has the concept been formed, and whether it is a useful concept, what
distinguishes internal displacement from other forms of forced migration;
- research on causes of displacement, boundaries and territories;
- livelihood strategies and coping strategies;
- local integration and host populations;
- how displaced people see themselves;
- the relationship between the places where displaced are located and the
places they fled from, as well as relationship between internally displaced
and migrants and refugees abroad.
Additionally, we would like to invite papers on the policy environment, aid
systems, protection, sovereignty, and the international dimension of
internal displacement.
The Research Council of Norway is funding the network and conference. Travel
grants for a limited number of researchers from developing countries will be
provided. Application details will be posted together with second circular
for the conference in August 2002.
