DESCRIPTION:
Round-table on GLOBAL CHALLENGES AND THE ATLANTIC COMMUNITY
7 November 2002 - International Conference Center of Geneva
10 October 2002
The International Relations Program of Webster University is pleased to
invite you to a Roundtable that it is convening on 7 November 2002 at 4PM at
the International Conference Center of Geneva on Global Challenges and the
Atlantic Community.
The concept of the Atlantic Community was originally developed during the
Second World War and its aftermath. Since the 1940s, it has played an
essential role in maintaining the security, freedom and prosperity of its
members and ultimately in the positive outcome of the Cold War. The Atlantic
Community has made an essential contribution to the development of European
integration as well as to the spreading and consolidation of a liberal
international economic order. In fact, this Community, based on the
principles of freedom, democracy, the respect of human rights and of
solidarity, has been one of the most successful groupings of states in
history.
The principal institutional expression of the Atlantic Community is the
North Atlantic Alliance. Yet, the fundamental principles and the more than
fifty years of Atlantic Community traditions go well beyond the security
area narrowly defined. Also, for many years now the Atlantic Community has
ceased to be a "geographic" or "geopolitical concept" but has become an
open-ended community of values.
The objective of the planned roundtable is to examine (1) the current and
future role of the Atlantic Community in dealing with the long-term
political, economic and security challenges faced by its members and by the
world at large, (2) its potential contribution to an open, equitable, safe
and prosperous international order, and (3) the likely evolution of the
Atlantic Community itself.
This event will be part of a series of conferences and seminars dealing with
important contemporary humanitarian, political or economic issues organized
by the International Relations Program of Webster University with the
participation of the Geneva international community. Attendance will be open
to the diplomatic community, international organizations, the academic
community, and the interested general public. We hope that you will be able
to attend.
