Satellite workshop at ICPhS XV in Barcelona 2003
"Intonation in language varieties - AM approaches"
Sunday 3rd August 2003, Universitat de Barcelona
This workshop will give researchers an opportunity to discuss and
evaluate the application of Autosegmental-Metrical approaches to the
intonation of language varieties. It is anticipated that focus groups
for a small number of languages for which such varietal study has been
undertaken will work on a number of common themes, as indicated below,
both prior to and at the workshop. The morning session of the workshop
will be given over to language-based guided group discussion of these
and other emergent themes. The afternoon session will consist of a
report-back session, a small number of invited plenary addresses on
central themes, and general discussion.
More details of the workshop and fuller descriptions of the themes can
be obtained at: http://www.vuw.ac.nz/lals/icphs/intonation_in_varieties.html
Further details (cost, etc.) will be posted to that website as they
become available.
Themes:
* Determination of phonological categories
* Systemic vs realisational differences
* Intonational hierarchy
* Stress
* Rhythm
Researchers interested in contributing to this workshop should contact
Paul Warren ([log in to unmask]) by February 15th 2003 at the latest,
giving details of the language (and variety or varieties of that
language) forming the focus of their research.

Speech Prosody 2004
First announcement
March 23-26, 2004 in Nara, Japan
Inspired by the success of the first international conference on
prosody 2002 in Aix-en-Provence, Japanese researchers who are working
on speech prosody are planning to invite the next conference to Nara,
an ancient capital of Japan. The rationale for holding the second
conference in Japan is that we have two on-going projects related to
prosody: one is "Prosody and Speech Processing," a large-scale
National Project supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research
on Priority Areas from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture
of Japan (headed by Keikichi Hirose at the University of Tokyo), and
the other is "Processing of Expressive Speech," funded by the Japan
Science & Technology Agency (headed by Nick Campbell at ATR). Since
both projects will last until the end of March 2004, it is quite
opportune for us to host the conference toward the end of March, when
the climate and scenary in Nara are ideal.
The current plan is as follows:
- Venue: Nara New Convention Center, Nara, Japan
- Period: March 23 (Tuesday) to 26 (Friday), 2004
- Committee:
Honorary Chair: Hiroya FUJISAKI (Professor Emeritus, University of
Tokyo)
Chair: Keikichi HIROSE (University of Tokyo)
Vice Chair: Nick CAMPBELL (ATR)
Secretary: Nobuaki MINEMATSU (University of Tokyo)
- Preliminary List of Topics:
Analysis, Formulation and Modeling of Prosody
Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics and Prosody
Cross-linguistic Studies of Prosody
Variations in Prosody
Prosody of Dialogues and Spontaneous Speech
Prosody of Emotional Speech
Prosody and Speech Perception
Prosody in Speech Synthesis
Prosody in Speech Recognition/Understanding
Pathology of Prosody and Aids for the Impaired
Speech Corpus for Prosody Research/Applications
Others
We are also pleased to give preliminary information on a satellite
symposium being planned by our colleagues at the Institute of
Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing.
Here are the plans:
- Tentative Title:
International Symposium on Tonal Aspects of Languages - with
Emphasis on Tone Languages -
- Venue: Institute of Linguistics, Beijing, China
- Period: March 28 (Sunday), 2004, registration
March 29 (Monday) to 30 (Tuesday), symposium
- Committes (tentative):
Honorary Chair: Zongji WU (Emeritus Nember, Institute of
Lingusitics)
Chair: Maocan LIN (Institute of Linguistics)
Secretary: Aijun LI (Institute of Linguistics)
For further information, please contact
Keikichi HIROSE mailto:[log in to unmask] (for SP2004)
Maocan LIN mailto:[log in to unmask] (for the symposium in Beijing)
We hope that our plans will meet the approval of many colleagues
working in the fields of research related to speech prosody both in
basic sciences and applied technology, and look forward to welcoming
you to Nara and Beijing,
Keikichi HIROSE and Maocan LIN

We look forward to continuing the tradition established at the previous
meetings in Kloster Seeon, Grenoble, Leeds, Old Saybrook and Autrans of
bringing together leading experts for the presentation and discussion of
current research into all aspects of speech production.

Applications are invited for the above positions, which are part of
the research program "Changing Lexical Representations in the Mental
Lexicon", funded by NWO.
The aims of the Research program are
(a) detailed study of the phonological and morphological changes in
various paradigms throughout the history of Dutch and the way in which
paradigms did or did not undergo paradigm leveling. This will be
compared with cross-linguistic results from other Germanic languages.
(b) in-depth study of how children build up lexical representations
and determine the pathways of development in the lexical
representations, the phonological and morphological components of
grammar, and their interaction.
(c) to determine the nature of lexical representations in the
phonology-morphology interface, the direction of change, and to
identify triggers for change.
(d) to investigate the consequences of the results for formal theories
of phonology and the organization of both the lexicon and the grammar.
PROJECT I: a 4-year salaried Ph.D. position, investigating changes in
various morphological paradigms, both derivational and inflectional,
in the history of Dutch and closely related languages, particularly of
West Germanic.
PROJECT II: a 4-year salaried Ph.D. position., investigating both the
early stages of acquisition and later stages in which morphological
characteristics of the language are acquired.
Applicants for either of the two Ph.D. positions must have native or
near-native competence in Dutch, and must have completed undergraduate
study in phonetics, phonology, morphology, historical linguistics or
psycholinguistics. The salary will be according to the Dutch
