Morning all,
In the context of the e-conference back in October, forum members may be
interested to hear about a guide issued by IGGI the UK based
Intra-governmental Group on Geographic Information (www.iggi.gov.uk).
This free 26 page A5 booklet summarises the reasons for, and benefits of,
metadata descriptions of geographically based datasets. It then introduces
the current standards and their support communities. Key among these is the
National Geospatial Data Framework (www.ngdf.org.uk) whose metadata
standard, based on the Dublin Core initiative with additions and extensions
to cover GIS type data, underpins the askGiraffe data locator system. There
is also useful guidance on the practicalities of implementing and
maintaining metadata descriptions within an organisation, and a Glossary of
terms.
