biab online abstracts - The British & Irish Archaeological Bibliography goes
live
British and Irish archaeology is in the process of joining other academic
disciplines like the hard sciences, law and earth sciences in the world of
online abstracts services.
The CBA's abstracts and indexing service - biab (The British & Irish
Archaeological Bibliography) - has begun the introduction of its full online
service with the launch of test screens for basic search and retrieval
options, using material from biab volume 4(2000) and volume 5(2001) at:
<http://www.biab.ac.uk>
This marks the beginning of a revolution in the way the public, academics
and professionals can gain access to information on archaeology and the
practice of archaeology in these islands from the late seventeenth century
to the present day.
Online abstracts and bibliographic references to nearly 200,000 documents
dating from 1695AD to the present day will be made available in a relational
database structure that will allow a greater degree of precision retrieval
than has ever been available before.
The test site contains only the most basic prototype searches. We would like
to invite list members to comment on this test site - tell us what you like,
what you want to see develop and what you don't like. Please email all
comments and questions to us at: [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>
The full online service will launch next spring. This will be an
indispensable resource for research of all kinds. Search options will be
developed to make full use of the database structure as well as the period
and subject classification system and available indexes. Search options will
be phased in as resources allow.
The subscription to volume 7 for 2003 remains at the reduced level of £20
for individuals and £80 for institutions - you can subscribe by contacting
the CBA Head Office or online at the CBA online shop:
<http://www.britarch.ac.uk/shop> . This subscription entitles the purchaser
to both hard-copy editions of the annual volume - distributed in Spring and
Autumn - plus full online access to the entire dataset!
This marks a significant stage in the development of online information
resources for archaeology and we look forward to developing the service
still further in line with user requirements.
