Many films in the North American experimental/avant-garde tradition
picture subjective reality and play with boundaries like
illusion/reality, etc. E.g., *Lost Highway* is very interestingly
illuminated by screening it alongside Maya Deren's *Meshes of the
Afternoon*. A still-important introduction to this tradition of North
American poetics is P. Adams Sitney's *Visionary Film*, just recently
reissued in a third edition by Oxford UP.
