Actually 'chaos theory' as I understand it includes an acknowledgement of
'patterns'. Chaos theorists don't come to the conclusion you state (ie
throwing up our arms etc). Instead, they - from what I've read - appear to
be stating that the precautionary principle needs to be taken seriously in
order to avoid 'catastrophe'.
