Call for Papers: ECPR Workshop on Republican Theory, Republican
Practice, Edinburgh March 28-April2 2003.(apologies for cross-postings)
The claim that civic republicanism can better address contemporary
problems than either liberalism or communitarianism has recently been
much debated in normative political theory. While it has been argued
that its fundamental principles ground distinctive institutions,
procedures and policies, this debate has been carried on often at a rather
abstract level.
This workshop aims to bring various levels of normative political theory
to interact with analytic, comparative and historical studies of republican
polities in order to examine the extent to which republican theory has
distinctive practical political implications, and whether these support the
claims made on its behalf. Within this broad theme, we welcome diverse
approaches that either address key concepts and issues critically, apply
normative republican theory to specific issues or policy areas, or examine
the treatment of such issues and policy areas in republican practice.
