Apologies for cross-postings. Terrell
During March 28-April 2, 2003, we - Lynn Dobson and Andreas Follesdal -
will co-direct a workshop on "Legitimate Federation? Normative Political
Theory and Institutional Design in the EU" in the ECPR (European Consortium
for Political Research) Joint Sessions at Edinburgh. We hope you will
consider submitting a proposal for this workshop, by December 1 2002. We
also urge you to pass this request on to others you think might be interested.
We will be meeting as the EU Convention on the Future of Europe enters its
final stage. The subsequent public debate needs scrutiny and input from
normative political theory and theories of institutional design. The
workshop will provide just that.

Time line
Deadline for submission of proposals is December 1, 2002; we aim to reply
by December 12. Please indicate clearly how your proposal addresses one or
more of the main themes and issues identified at
http://www.essex.ac.uk/ecpr/jointsessions/edinburgh/details/ws%2025.pdf
Publication plans
Our group will examine issues of constitutional and institutional reform
from perspectives informed by normative theories, and could hardly be more
timely. Our contributions draw on and address the Convention's work as
much as possible, with an eye to assessing its proposals to guide future
developments. Given the importance and topicality of the workshop's work
we intend to publish a selected and revised set of the contributions in an
edited collection very soon after the workshop.
As you know, the format of ECPR Joint Sessions offers a rare chance to
engage in concentrated collaboration with a group of specialists who work
in the same research areas, over a number of days. Participants usually
find the workshop discussions add much value to their own work, and the
Joint Sessions have come to enjoy a strong reputation.
If you would like any further information please do contact either of
us. Contact details are below.
With best wishes
Yours
