Thanks, Steve Garner
At the National Portrait Gallery of Australia we present annually a student
portrait exhibition. This includes portraits made by students at all levels
of learning in the secondary school. The curatorial theme for the exhibition
in 2003, entitled Headspace, will be drawn portraits. Part of the aim in
selecting this medium is to advance an appreciation and understanding, among
the community of school art teachers, of the value and importance of drawing
for all areas of learning.
Can you suggest some books or resources that might assist me in putting
together some ideas and material that will support an advocacy for drawing
within the formal school sector art education community, through this
exhibition?
I am interested in aspects of the history of drawing, its role in a range of
thinking and making processes. I think the Big Draw project is inspiring.
Drawing is not well taught and needs some consciousness raising about its
value across learning and thinking processes in the Australian context. I
will value your thoughts regarding this request.
Best regards
