Dear List members,
Please find attached a message about IFLA and the
possibility of applying for LA grants to attend the
conference in Glasgow in August. Given that the theme of
the conference is "Democracy, Diversity, Delivery" it would
be highly appropriate for the Diversity Council to be well
represented there and to receive grants to enable some of
us to attend. The closing date for applications for these
grants is March 15th. Full details are given below.
Best wishes,
Philip

Be Part of IFLA Glasgow
The year 2002 is going to be an important one for the profession in the UK,
not only because it marks the unification of the LA and IIS to form CILIP
but because from August 18th-24th we will be hosting the annual IFLA
(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) Annual
Conference in Glasgow. Every year, this conference provides the largest
single networking opportunity for LIS workers from throughout the world to
meet together to discuss major issues and share experience and expertise.
The conference is held in a different country every year (recent venues have
been Havana, Istanbul, Beijing, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Jerusalem
and Boston) and attracts up to 5,000 participants. In 2002 the conference
theme will be "Libraries for Life; Democracy, Diversity, Delivery" and there
will be special events to celebrate the 75th birthday of IFLA.
It has long been the LA's practice to provide financial support to LA
members who are active in IFLA affairs. Priority will be given to Chairs and
Secretaries of IFLA Sections, members of Section Standing Committees, those
invited to give papers, those on the Committees of Round Tables or
Discussion Groups, in that order. This will be available as normal to assist
attendance in Glasgow.
In the previous two years we have also given 4 full travel grants to members
in the UK who were first time attendees. To celebrate "IFLA coming home" we
will be able to award not only these but have a further £10,000 for full
grants to enable a larger number of CILIP members to attend the Conference.
Some awards will be reserved for those who have Chartered in the last two
years, but all in current membership of either the LA or IIS are welcome to
apply.
The deadline for receipt of applications for the above awards is 15th March
2002. Further information can be obtained from the address below and
interactive online application forms can be found at:
