CLAUD is a consortium of librarians in Higher Education networking to
improve library access for disabled users in the South and Southwest of

This conference is aimed at anyone involved in providing library
services to disabled users. The day's programme will cover supporting
the accessible curriculum and making library services and materials
accessible to users with disabilities. The Programme will be varied and
will include workshop sessions relating to a variety of disability
issues. The main speakers are:
Judith Waterfield - Head of Disability ASSIST Service, University of
Plymouth.
Judith Waterfield has been a teacher, educational therapist and academic
in the field of support for learning for many years. Currently the Head
of Disability Assist Services (incorporating the South West Regional
ACCESS Centre) at the University of Plymouth and the Project manager of
SWANDS. Judith has been at the forefront of developing and nationally
delivering courses for teaching and support staff in higher education.
Ann Jeffries, Head of Equal Opportunities, University of Plymouth.
Ann Jeffries is Head of the University of Plymouth's EO Development
Unit, former Head of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work and
a Principal Lecturer. Before joining the University in 1987, Ann had
been working in North America for many years, initially as an outreach
community social worker in inner city areas in Michigan, USA and then
developing similar programmes in Ottawa, Canada. While completing a
Masters in Public Administration, Ann did research with Health and
Welfare Canada on the Independent Living Movement being developed there
by disabled people. Ann also taught a core EO module for our MA in
Women's Studies for many years. In her current position, Ann has chaired
both the Disability and Race Equality Working Groups which have been
responsible for the development of our SENDA and Race Equality Policies
and Action Plans.
The workshops will be run by:
Ruth Frampton, Deputy Centre Manager RNIB Transcription Centre South
West
Ruth graduated from Durham University in 1978 with a first in Latin with
Greek and then worked in the City for six years with Royal Reinsurance.
During that time she married and then took a "career break" to spend
time bringing up two boys.
Ruth joined the RNIB Transcription Centre SW in 1994 and helped in its
development into a fully multi-media facility on a purpose-built site.
In 1997 she introduced music transcription to further extend the
services of the centre to visually-impaired people.
Ruth is a keen amateur musician, playing violin and singing in four
choirs.
Michael Gom, AbilityNet
With over 15 years experience of working in the field of IT and
disability Mike has built up a reputation for clear honest advice,
working with a very wide range of disabling conditions such as cerebral
palsy, dyslexia, visual impairment, stroke, multiple sclerosis and work
related upper limb disorder (RSI).
He was most recently employed by AbilityNet, a national charity which
aims to help people, with a disabling or limiting condition, overcome
computer access problems. He was recruited to open and run flagship
sites at the Microsoft Head Office in Reading and Hewlett Packard
Research Laboratories in Bristol. Mike demonstrates great versatility
drawing on his work with.
Dolphin Computer Access (UK Field Sales Manager)
Dolphin manufactures and markets computer access systems for people who
have a visual difficulty. Working exclusively with IBM compatible PC
architecture they build a range of successful 'voice' products that
makes it possible for a blind or partially sighted person to use a
computer.
Freedom Technology (Formerly Elfin Systems)
Freedom Technology manufactured and marketed a range of computer access
systems, environmental control equipment and communication aids for
people with severe physical disability
TRANSPORT
Plymouth is easily reached by following the M5 motorway and then
continuing on the A38 Expressway via Exeter. It's about a
three-and-a-half-hour journey from London to Plymouth. Robbins Hall is
a short walk/taxi ride from Plymouth railway station. A road map will
be provided for delegates. Car parking can be arranged but parking is
limited. Delegates should indicate on the order form if they require a
car parking space so that arrangements can be made for them in advance
of the conference.
ACCOMMODATION
Robbins Hall is a modern building which was constructed in 1997.
Robbins Hall is situated close to the Plymouth College of Art and Design
and the City Centre..
VENUE
The Babbage building was opened in 1979 and was named after Charles
Babbage (1791-1871). Charles Babbage was born in Totnes and was
invented the first mechanical computing machine. The building was
originally called the teaching block and before it was clad, looked like
the old computing punch card, hence the connecting with computing
services. All the committee rooms on the fourth floor have been named
after local rivers.
