"Access to high quality on-line information and learning resources is now
essential to all engaged in education, whether as students, teachers, or
researchers. But finding and using the right resources is not easy - for
example, exploiting multimedia materials can be particularly demanding. It
is clear also that without the enabling role of a managed environment,
information seekers cannot always be confident about the quality of the
information they encounter. The development of a coherent information
environment is an important means of helping users to maximise the value of
the Internet, by making best use of its bewildering profusion of information

NICE WEB SITE
In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes
come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing
mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a
short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large,
and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy
discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these:
Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice
Web Site Archive.
RAE 2001
http://www.rae.ac.uk/
Funding for research in UK higher education is very much depenent on the
outcomes of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The RAE assesses the
quality of research in universities and colleges in the UK, and takes place
every four to five years. Around #5 billion of research funds will be
distributed in response to the results of the 2001 RAE. This 2001 RAE site,
where the results of the exercise are now available, may not be a
particularly 'Nice Web Site' according to the usual criteria, but it is of
great interest to many of the readers of the Internet Resources Newsletter.

PRESS RELEASES
**** psci-com relaunched ****
The Wellcome Trust Library has re-launched psci-com ( http://psci-com.org.uk
) after a period of development and re-design. psci-com is a web gateway to
high-quality internet resources on science communication, public engagement
with science and the wider impact of science on society.
At its centre psci-com comprises an evaluated database of high-quality
internet resources relevant to public engagement with science. In selecting
resources for inclusion attention has been paid to items that meet defined
quality criteria and those that are of use to the target audiences.
Resources include funding sources, practical guides for science
communicators, competitions and awards, science centre information. The
gateway also covers the wider issues of science and society including public
attitudes to science, science education, science policy and science and the
arts. The database focused initially on biomedical topics such as human
genetics and society, but has expanded to include many resources outside of
the life sciences. The aim is to appeal to the wide spectrum of disciplines
represented by the public engagement of science community.
Following the redesign of the web site, the user is now able both to search
and browse the database. Browsing is achieved by clicking on a series of
related subject headings which allow the user to follow links between
broader and narrower terms. For example, clicking on Science Communication
will take you to a series of more specific topics such as Science writing,
Science festivals and Risk communication.
Other features include an electronic calendar of conferences, workshops and
other events, access to monthly digests of books, reports and articles on
science and society and access to an electronic discussion forum, also
called psci-com.
In order to reach a wider audience, psci-com has been affiliated with the
BIOME web site. BIOME is a collection of gateways which provide access to
evaluated, quality Internet resources in health and life sciences. This
means that you can access psci-com directly or through BIOME.
If you can suggest any relevant web sites or are planning an event that you
think should be included on psci-com, you can use the form on psci-com to
submit your information. Alternatively, contact me directly.

**** UDC Now Available Online ****
The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), the world's foremost
classification scheme for all fields of knowledge, has been made available
online (in English) as UDC Online BS 1000. UDC Online is designed to index
and retrieve highly technical information and is well suited to indexing
traditional as well as non-traditional media. The new online product from
BSI and Technical Indexes is presented by British Standards Publishing
Limited on behalf of the UDC Consortium (www.udcc.org).
The new product can be used to index multi-media collections, motion
pictures, map collections, art collections and web-based directories of
learning resources. It is uniquely equipped to represent interrelations
between subjects. UDC Online is searchable by truncation, and offers the
option of broadening the search if it is not immediately productive. The
enhanced product now offers:
7 Complete content of the internationally owned official UDC database
7 The most up to date version always available online
7 Number building facility to help construct complex UDC numbers on screen
7 Search and view online
7 Cut and paste to save time and avoid transcription errors
7 User-friendly screens
7 Multiple search strategies e.g. string search in natural language, boolean
search, searching using summaries and shifting to greater detail or browsing
the notation, up or down the hierarchy
7 Context sensitive help
The online format offers many user benefits including a number building
facility that helps construct complex UDC numbers on screen as you watch.
Once the number is complete, cut and paste allows you to record and use it
very quickly and with no risk of transcription error. There are advantages
in using UDC online in Internet services as the UDC structure more than any
other lends itself to machine searching schemes. There has been significant
market interest in an online version of UDC for some time. Those using UDC
will find this new product fills this modern day need."
UDC Online BS 1000 is available on annual subscription at a special
introductory price of #295 p.a. for a limited period only.

BOOK REVIEW
Review of:
The advanced internet searcher's handbook,
2nd edition, by Phil Bradley,
Library Association Publishing, 2002
ISBN: 1-85604-380-0
#29.95
Last month I reviewed 'The Invisible Web' by Chris Sherman and Gary Price,
and said that it was the best book I'd read about the Internet all year. As
it is now a new year, I can safely say that the second edition of Phil
Bradley's 'The advanced internet searcher's handbook' is the best book I've
read this year. Bradley's book is liable to remain the best read for some
time, and I would not like to choose between the two, as they both contain a
great deal of useful information.
The purpose of 'The advanced internet searcher's handbook' is to help people
search the Internet more effectively by giving a better understanding of how
search engines and similar tools work. It goes further than this, though,
and also looks at ways to find images, sound, multimedia and people, and in
addition gives information about numerous other resources.
The first 100 pages deal almost exclusively with search engines - free text
search engines, directory-based search engines, meta-search engines,
natural-language search engines, and resource- or site-specific search
engines. Did you know that there are over 20,000 search engines on the
Internet? Bradley explains how they work, how to make the most of them, how
to focus searches, how to use advanced search features, and when to use the
different types of search engines.
Bradley them gives an outline of other resources such as online communities,
commercially available databases and virtual libraries. Of virtual libraries
he says " they are a very useful set of resources, which are all too often
sadly ignored or badly publicized.", so I was pleased that he cited PINAKES
which is produced by Heriot Watt Library, as a good launchpad to over 40
virtual libraries and gateways.
There are helpful chapters on intelligent agents, newsgroups and mailing
lists, and these are followed by a section giving real examples of Internet
searches to show how to use the various tools discussed in the earlier
chapters. Some crystal ball gazing into the future of searching the Internet
is then followed by forty hints for better and quicker searching.
'The advanced internet searcher's handbook' is well researched and easy to
read. Jargon is avoided, and the lists of Web addresses at the end of each
chapter would make excellent bookmarks. Every information professional with
even the slightest involvement in the Internet should make sure they have
access to a copy of thisbook.
