Hi Chip. Good to see you in Rochester!
According to my notes (always the way after a meeting, yes?!?), I promised
three things:
1. a reference to the early French-Canadian convict journal that has been
studied in some depth
2. contacts for Mark Cranfield, who is in charge of the Oral and History
Folklore Division at the National Library of Australia
3. an extended article for the 25th anniversary issue.
So, here goes:
1.The journal is by Francois-Maurice Lepailleur who was an exiled Canadien
patriote from the Rebellion of 1837 in Lower Canada. He eventually returned to
Canada in 1844, though there are other exiles from the same time who stayed,
one of whom has a huge number of descendants who have made quite a fuss about
him (can't remember this name -- you have to get it from Gerry Turcotte at the
University of Wollongong). The journal is in the Archives nationales du Quebec
and pertains to 1840-42 in Longbottom Convict Camp, which was near Parramatta.
The reference to a tranlation and discussion is:
Greenwood, F. Murray, trans. & ed. Land of a Thousand Sorrows: The Australian
Prison Journal, 1840-42, of the Exiled Canadien Patriote, Francois-Maurice
Lepailleur. Vancouver: University of British Columbia Press, 1980.
It contains a list of all the patriote exiles plus references to a dissertation
on them and other sources, of course. Let me know if you need anything from it
(if you can't get it through inter-library loan).
2. Mark Cranfield can be reached through the Oral History and Folklore
Division, National Library of Australia, Parkes Circle, Canberra, ACT 2600,
Australia. Do use my name -- he is a good friend and will treat you well. He
LOVES showing off their collection (which is very good in some respects) and
their facilities (which are outstanding -- a state-of-the-art recording studio
that is to die for!). And he particularly enjoys having foreign Folklore
visitors to show about in order to indicate the relevance, importance, value of
the Division to the Library as a whole.
3. I am looking for a computer file of the piece, but as yet have had no
luck. I presume that is what you want, yes? Or would just the Foreword and
Commentary that I am adding plus the hard-copy text suffice?
Please let me know if you need the former -- I will have the latter ready as of
tomorrow, but will need a while longer to put the whole thing on computer again.
All the best to you and Anne.
Cheers,
Carole
