Dear Members,
I've just joined our list. I'm working at the University of Turku, Finland, in the Department of Comparative Literature. I'm doing my doctoral dissertation on Michelle Cliff's three novels Abeng, No Telephone to Heaven and Free
Enterprise. The focus of my study is on the questions of identity and its constructedness in the postcolonial context. So, my interests, in the nutshell, would be something like: performative gender-roles, the rewriting of
Jamaican history (in Cliff's novels), her revisionary use of myths, feminism, queer theory and praxis, lesbian narratives and the question of female autobioraphy, migration and exile, transnational feminism and so on... there are
so many inspiring themes in Cliff's texts.
Recently I've been working with the issues of queerness and sexuality in the context of Cliff.
My dissertation is one part of a larger research project funded by the Academy of Finland called "Fictional Constructions of Cultural Identity: Place, Gender, Ethnicity and 'Race' ." My colleague in this project is Sara Eeva, who
introduced herself earlier on this list.
And as Sara, I would be delighted to find contacts to other researches with the same interests.
Best wishes,
Kaisa Ilmonen
