Valuing Caribbean Languages
NIACE/Jamaica 2K Conferences
Friday 31 January, Southwark - London, South Bank University
Wednesday 5 February, Manchester City Football Ground
Saturday 8 February, University of Wolverhampton
The culminating event will be held at The University of the West Indies,
Mona Campus, in Kingston, Jamaica at the end of February 2002
Through discussion across Jamaica 2K’s extensive network of contacts in the
UK and Jamaica, it became clear that essential work on Caribbean Languages
and the implications for current practice in the 21st Century needed kick
starting. In May 2002, Jamaica 2K organised a conference hosted by Newman
College of HE in Birmingham called “Valuing Jamaican Creole/ Patois” and
invited long time UK based activist and leader in this field, Professor Gus
John, and Dr Clement Lambert, an experienced Teacher Trainer from The
University of the West Indies, to share their views. The event was well
attended and caused considerable interest in the UK and in Jamaica. A
conference pack and video of the event is now available from Jamaica 2K.
Since then, the Jamaica 2K have redoubled their efforts and worked with
colleagues to bring together the ambitious series of conferences.
The conferences aim:
· To raise or refresh, awareness of the issues related to valuing
Caribbean Languages
· To create understanding about the range and diversity of Caribbean
Languages and the implications for current practice
· To provide practical strategies that will make a difference for
Caribbean Language speakers
· To influence policy and practice within organisations at all levels
·
