DISAPPEARING ANCIENT GAMES IN THE CARIBBEAN:
THE HINDU/INDIAN EXPERIENCE IN TRINIDAD
Abstract - Traditional games like kabadi, pakda pakdi, oka buka, guli
danda, chor sipathi and huliya, brought by indentured immigrants from India
to the Caribbean, have now almost disappeared. They were played on the long
voyages on the ships and the lonely estates on the sugar plantations as a
form of recreation and to overcome difficult mental and physical
challenges. Re-created from the memories of elders of the Hindu/Indian
community in Trinidad, this paper is a re-construction of those leisure
activities and sporting events performed during Indentureship (1845-1917).
The sports provide a window to the spiritual and religious values of an
ancient civilisation, for the rules and rituals of many of the games
symbolised man's aspirations for perfection, peace and harmony in the
natural environment, the human world, the heavens, and the cosmos.
Keywords - ancient traditions; sports history; folklore; Indian culture;
Caribbean.

INTER-ETHNIC MARRIAGES:
THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR FAMILY STABILITY AND RELIGIOUS RETENTION
Abstract - There is no denying that inter-ethnic relationships and
marriages in multi-cultural and multi-racial Trinidad are steadily on the
rise. This is a whole new area that has never been substantially
researched. What effects do these relationships have on family stability
and harmony, and on the retention of one's religion and culture? These
questions span complex theoretical issues that are linked to problems of
cultural identity, domestic violence, divorce, suicide and abandoned
children. This paper discusses significant research findings in other parts
of the world and suggests ways in which they may be applicable to our own
family and society.
Keywords - cultural anthropology; inter-ethnic marriages; family stability;
religion and culture; Trinidad and Tobago.
