Subject: help for New School
Dear Colleagues,
Please find below a message from Susan Schroeder about recent developments
at the Graduate Faculty (GF) at the New School in New York City. She is
trying to gather support for the Graduate Faculty from intellectuals in the
European Union.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Giuseppe F.
Dear Post Keynesian scholars,
I do not know if you are aware of the present situation at the Graduate
Faculty (GF).The GF Dean, Kenneth Prewitt, resigned suddenly out of
frustration at the lack of support for basic academic values in the
University Administration and the lack of a coherent framework within which
to plan the GF's long-term future. As a consequence, the GF is now is a
very precarious situation. If this situation persists, and the GF
experiences a loss of enrollment, the GF may no longer exist in the future
as we have known it.
It is important for those members of the intellectual community in the
European Union who understand the importance of the GF to show support for
it to the New School President, Robert Kerrey, at this time.I have
constructed an open letter to Kerrey. If you like it well enough to give
me your permission, I will attach your name to it at the closure.Or, you
could take a more private approach by writing or e-mailing Kerrey directly;
Kerrey's e-mail address is: [log in to unmask]
I hope you will take a few moments to consider a way to demonstrate your
support.Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Please
feel free to forward this e-mail to other EU researchers and professors who
may be interested in expressing their support. And, if you need additional
information about the situation, Duncan Foley, Edward Nell, and Anwar
Shaikh have made themselves available to answer your questions
([log in to unmask], [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask]).

Dear President Kerrey,
As members of the intellectual community of the European Union, we have
written this open letter to you to express our concern and dismay about the
recent resignation of Dr. Kenneth Prewitt as the Dean of the Graduate
Faculty and about the fragile financial condition of the Graduate Faculty
itself.
As you well know, the Graduate Faculty at the New School was a haven for
those members of our community who were persecuted for openly expressing
critical views inearly 20th century Europe.Without the Graduate Faculty
an important part of our community would have been lost.We have take pride
in the fact that these members contributed so greatly in establishing the
reputation of the Graduate Faculty as it stands today.
Over the years we have observed the Graduate Faculty thrive and provide
cutting-edge research for alternative perspectives in a variety of subjects
in the social sciences. We have observed the Graduate Faculty provide its
students, fledgling members of the world community, with well-rounded
curriculum and skills necessary for them to take their place in or assist
the formaton of democratic societies.
And, unfortunately, we have also observed the students, staff, and faculty
members of Graduate Faculty languish recently. The financial resources to
support the curriculum and the research required for the development of
critical thought and to constructively engage in discourse required for the
promotion of positive social change have become more insecure with each
passing year. Not just insecure, but insecure within an institution (New
School University) which has, as you have stated recently, experienced a
substantial increase in its endowment.
We ask you, President Kerrey, if critical thought and development of
alternative theoretical approaches & research for solving social issues,
necessary building blocks fora healthy democratic society, are to be
sacrificed under the guise of <DOUBLE LOW-9 QUOTATION MARK>budgetary discipline," then how is
<DOUBLE LOW-9 QUOTATION MARK>democratic society" envisioned by the New School University?
We strongly urge you to strengthen the New School's commitment to the
Graduate Faculty by taking the necessary steps to ensure its financial
security and to continue its tradition of intellectual and academic
excellence by retaining Dr. Kenneth Prewitt.
