Blimey, Tim.
I just had a quick look at the site again, I like the review of Geraldine's
book, she deserves the praise, but I did think the comments on Alison's book
were a bit harsh, to say the least. I think Alison at her best can write a
beautiful lyrical and sometimes angry poetry that dodges the oppositions of
'mainstream' and 'avant-garde'. I certainly don't think words like 'witless'
are apt in respect of her writing.
I'm very good at being witless myself and can aver that it takes a long and
dedicated apprenticeship.
That said, I think it a fine and stimulating site, this beef excepted. Her
third collection btw. I had the interesting experience, btw again, of doing
a radio recording for the first time today, the studio was tiny, the mics
huge, the technology smart and sleazy, and my dulcet Brummie tones were
recorded for all posterity poetically. One of the questions in the interview
part was what made me start writing poetry. I said I didn't know, nor could
I recall when it began, but it crept over me like a compulsion.
Ah, these addicts!
Best
