Daniel, Mark,
It is browser dependent to an extent - Bb generally say its not a Bb thing
because they understandably couldn't make it be all things to all browsers
(though they say the same about pdfs and there I think there is room for
improvement) - you need to put an instruction at item level that says
rightclick and save file/save link as/save target as to get save to hard
drive. In netscape for example, if you left click a word document it will
probably offer you save to file, but we found a line of instruction in the
item below the file link works best (or indeed type it int he name of link
to file box...)

Subject: Re: Dumb Question No 43
Mark,
Have suffered the same problem. We have Word forms that we want students to
fill in on-line. With some browsers when you back out of the page after
making changes it prompts you to save the altered version, but we found
that on some PC'c this didn't happen, resulting in students losing there
work. We eventually discovered that anyone using browser IE5.5 or above
would not get the save prompt, this meant that the only way to save the
document was to right click on the link.
We e-mailed Bb about this problem and they seemed unconcerned, stating that
this was not their problem.
