Proposal deadline: January 15th , 2003
Proposals of 2 paragraphs (about 100 words) are welcome, and should
indicate both topic and the format you prefer (talk, discussion group,
workshop). Submissions will be responded to by January 31st. This is
intended to be a very small conference with a specific focus, and although
the intent is to consider the interrelation of Romanticism, academia and
parenting, participation is not restricted to those who are parents only.
However, this CFP comes after a pre-circulated query of interest, and
although I will try to accommodate as many participants as possible, there
may be many seats available left in the conference.
Possible topics:
Romanticism is, in fact, a very apt field for initiating discussions on
institutional recognition of the importance of family within an academic
career. The focus on childhood, the imagination, education, and a host of
other modern concerns begins in the Romantic Period. This conference would
focus generally on Romanticism and parenting—with historical papers on
parenting and poethood in the British Romantic period, writing for children
and educational treatises; workshops on parenting and the profession that
integrate research and/or teaching with parenting; discussions of the
various ways in which childrearing changes one’s understanding of various
texts and of conceptions integral to Romanticism like the Romantic child,
Nature, and the Imagination; and papers on the historical contexts for
considering proposals for institutional change, and for advocating changes
in the profession itself. Presenters could give work-in-progress talks,
talks on pedagogy as the combination of research and parenting, or workshop
sessions.
This conference piggybacks on the NASSR 2003 conference, taking place two
days before that conference and ending the morning of August 1st. The
afternoons of the 31st and 1st are left free for those who want to take
advantage of New York in the summer, especially if you are bringing family
with you.
