CALL FOR PAPERS
Submissions are invited for a conference on ‘Elites, Print Media
and Social Control in Britain and Europe, 1500-1800’, which
will be held at the University of Manchester on 24 and 25 April
2003.
Most research on publishing history and the role of print culture
has focussed on its role in challenging the status quo. By
considering how that culture was used to support and reinforce
the existing political structure, the conference will be an
important and distinctive corrective to much recent work in this
area.
The purpose of the conference is therefore to study
the ways in which print culture reinforced and supported the
existing political and religious structures in Britain and continental
Europe during the hand-press period (1500-1800). We hope
thereby to arrive at a better understanding of the complex
relationship between religious and secular power and the print
media during this period.
Papers should be in English, of 20 minutes duration (i.e. about
2,000-2,500 words) and it is intended that there should be a
short discussion after each paper. Outline proposals (consisting
of the title of the paper plus an abstract of not more than 250
words) should be submitted by email before 1 December
2002 to either of the following:
Dr Adrian Armstrong (for papers covering 1500-1650)
{ HYPERLINK "mailto:[log in to unmask]" [log in to unmask]
Dr David Adams (for papers covering 1651-1800)
{ HYPERLINK "mailto:[log in to unmask]" [log in to unmask]
It is intended that the papers given should be published in an
appropriate printed or electronic journal. The publication
resulting from the conference will have a coherent thematic
structure, and the editors reserve the right to request the revision
of any outline proposals or papers which in their view do not fit
in with the overall theme.
