Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in California in
conjunction
with the exhibition, "George Romney 1734-1802: British Art's Forgotten
Genius" (September 15 - December 1, 2002).

The Robert R. Wark Lecture
Alex Kidson, Curator of British Art, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and
curator of the Romney exhibition, will present a lecture entitled,
"George
Romney and the Operation of Fashion: A Case Study in Late
Eighteenth-Century
British Portraiture." This lecture is free and open to the public.
October 25-26, 2002 (Friday-Saturday) 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
"Facing the Eighteenth Century: New Approaches to British Portraiture"
This two-day conference provides a forum for reassessing the meaning
and
role of portraiture in eighteenth-century British culture. The
speakers
consist of a diverse group of curators and art historians from North
America
and Great Britain. Papers will examine portraiture in a wide range of
media,
including prints, drawings, miniatures, painting, and sculpture, and
address
portraiture's place in various historical and artistic contexts.
Registration is $25.00 (graduate students free). Optional lunches are
available at an additional cost.
