WILLIAM BLAKE'S LARGE COLOUR PRINTS: A SYMPOSIUM
TATE BRITAIN
MILLBANK, LONDON
Keynote Speaker: D.W. Dörrbecker (University of Trier, Germany)
- "The Messiness of 'Meaning' in Blake's '1795' Colour Prints" -
SATURDAY 23rd FEBRUARY 2002
The main aim of this Symposium is to work on Blake's Large Colour Prints,
the majority of which are at Tate Britain, e.g. 'Newton,' 'Nebuchadnezzar,'
'Elohim creating Adam,' 'The Night of Enitharmon's Joy' (previously known
as 'Hecate'). With the arguable exception of 'Newton,' why have they proved
so resistant to interpretation? Do they have a common centre by virtue of
shared themes and iconography, or subject and technique? The existence of
multiple impressions and working drawings, not to say deceptive dating, has
tended to lead critics to either be evasive or neglectful of them.
Papers of 20 minutes duration are invited, ideally giving some sense of the
range of these works. Abstracts of 200-300 words should be sent to
[log in to unmask] by 10 February 2002.
Event organizers: Sibylle Erle, Mei-Ying Sung, and David Worrall (St.
Mary's College, Strawberry Hill).
£10, £5 Concessions.
