'Byron: the Image of the Poet'
Day Conference, 8 February 2003
National Portrait Gallery, Ondaatje Wing Lecture Theatre
Byron is the most-portrayed of all British writers. His visual
image was a
crucial part of his appeal, and fans of both sexes pursued his
windswept,
open-shirted look through all the publishing media of the Regency.
Since
then, Byron has been reinterpreted visually in many media,
including on
film and television.
This day conference, organised jointly by the National Portrait
Gallery and
King's College London, with the support of the London Byron
Society,
explores the making of Byron's image and its continuing
fascination.
Speakers: Germaine Greer, Bernard Beatty, Geoffrey Bond, Peter
Cochran,
Christine Kenyon Jones, Tom Mole, Annette Peach.
Tickets (£20 for members of Byron Societies, students and the
unwaged, and
£30 for others) are available from NPG/King's Byron Conference,
c/o
Education Department, National Portrait Gallery, St Martin's
Place, London
