Blake in the Orient
To be held in Kyoto Japan 29-30 November 2003

Call for papers:
We welcome abstracts of 300-400 words for papers of 20-25
minutes duration. Papers are invited in three concentric
areas.
1 the genealogy of reception of Blake in Japan in the areas
of art, literature and philosophy (a history dating back to
the late nineteenth century; the first major exhibition was
held in Kyoto in 1927).
2 discourses of nation and empire in Blake’s work, and
issues of othering and the exotic
3 broader consideration of the impact of European
Romanticism in the East.
Keynote speakers: Elinor Shaffer, David Worrall
It is hoped that there will be a concurrent exhibition at
Kyoto Museum of Modern Art of the reception of Blake in
Japan and Japanese artists who were much influenced by
Blake and were active in the Kyoto area such as Kagaku
MURAKAMI(1888-1939), Hako IRIE (1887-1948) and Ryusei
KISHIDA (1891-1929) and others.
To facilitate handling we would prefer electronic
