On the subject of Hugill, also look at his "Songs of the Sea" (New York:
McGraw-Hill, 1977) which is full of sea songs of many nations and languages
and many of these refer to ports. As usual with Hugill, the notes are
informative and interesting. But I can't think offhand of a tradition in any
Western European language that *doesn't* have songs that refer to ports and
harbours. Not surprising, really, given the geography, so if this is a new
research project, you'll be spoilt for choice of material.
