The Archive in Art Practice -
Saturday, 22 June 2002
A day event to accompany the exhibition Potential: ongoing archive
John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton 25 June - 24 August 2002
Potential: ongoing archive is an exhibition considering the role of the
archive in current art practice through the work of twelve international
artists who engage with archival and documentation processes.
The Archive in Art Practice, -is a one day symposium that will take place on
the opening day of the exhibition on Saturday, 22 June 2002. The artists in
Potential: ongoing archive will talk about their projects, considering the
role and status of the archive in their practice. Questions that arise are
to do with the collection process; the possibilities and limits of an
autonomous, self-defined, self-generated archive and the social networks
that are produced. If these works are then integrated or incorporated by
existing institutions, how does this happen and what are the effects? When
artists carry out their own research projects in public collections or
institutional archives, what relations are revealed between the material and
the institution? And what is the new context that is created?
The event will take place in the John Hansard Gallery. A coach from London
