DUMBARTON OAKS RESEARCH LIBRARY


Function: Collection development and research assistance to scholars in a
distinguished library (approximately 185,000 volumes) with world-renowned
collections in Byzantine and medieval studies, garden history and landscape
architecture, and Pre-Columbian studies.  Research assistance involves all
three disciplines, with the greatest emphasis on specialized service to
Byzantine studies scholars.  Reports to Head Librarian.  The Research
Library uses Sirsi for its integrated library system, participates in HOLLIS
(the Harvard union catalog), and OCLC.  A new library facility is being
designed with completion expected in 2004. 

Duties:	
1.    Evaluates, selects, and manages print and electronic collections
including monographs, serials, standing orders, gifts, exchanges, and
approval plans.  Emphasis in collection development duties is on Byzantine
studies with some shared responsibility for landscape studies collection.  
2.    Works closely with Directors of Studies, resident Fellows, visiting
scholars and authorized readers, providing research assistance.
3.    Works closely with Head Librarian, Library Assistant, and consulting
conservator to assess and monitor preservation needs, including developing
plans and recommendations for reformatting, updating policies, and devising
and implementing preservation strategies.
4.    Responds to reference queries by telephone, mail, and e-mail.
5.    Shares responsibility for intellectual content of Library's web page
(under development), including researching appropriate links for Byzantine
Studies.
6.    Provides bibliographic instruction for Fellows, staff, and visiting
scholars; offers selective dissemination of information to same on new
research tools, publications, and web sites.
7.    Provides orientation for new readers.
8.    Shares interlibrary loan duties with second bibliographer/ research
services librarian.
9.    Performs related duties as needed.

Qualifications: 
      Required: ALA-accredited MLS or foreign equivalent.  3-5 years of
experience in an academic or research library.  Strong knowledge of
Byzantine or medieval studies, art history, and bibliography.  Demonstrated
evidence of strong commitment to public service.  Practical knowledge of
electronic resources and databases that support research in the humanities
and art history.  Working knowledge of at least two modern foreign languages
(Greek and/or Slavic languages highly desirable).  Ability to work
independently and in a collaborative group environment.  Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills in order to successfully contribute
to an evolving work situation requiring flexibility and versatility.
      Preferred: graduate work in Byzantine or medieval studies, art
history, or landscape history.  Strong computer skills, including some
experience with creation of web pages for a scholarly audience.

Grade 56: salary range $41,000 - $61,000.  35-hour work week.  Excellent
